Recession + Selling our Heritage = Recovery…?

So it seems our government wants to sell off over 1 million acres of Irish forests currently managed by Coillte and home to vast numbers of species of flaura and fauna that essentially make up a large part of our cultural and ecological heritage. Â Does this seem sensible to you? Â In the case that it would eject us from our downward spiral into economic depression (if you believe that’s what’s happening) then I think we would all have to take a long look at the cost/benefit ratio, but the reality is that it won’t. Â No matter what happens, history doesn’t favour selling large tracts of land to commercial forestry interests (reference most of the tropical hardwood coming out of South America much to the detriment of its ecological landscape) – some of the potential buyers include a corporation headed up by none other than – Bertie Ahern! Â Yes our most trustworthy ex-Taoiseach is bidding along with a Chinese corporation and I’m sure many others that would love a bit of our Emerald Isle. Â Have problems with this proposed sale?
