Miles of foods. Not piles of foods.

Well if any of you are on Twitter, you should apparently have heard (though somehow we missed it – must be following all the wrong people, @stephenfry anyone?) that the heat is on, the gauntlet has been daintily laid on the floor and the challenge has been set – to eat only Irish produce for the entire week. Â The challenge setter, if you will, is one Brendan, a farmer, of Castlemine Farm in Roscommon – only down the road from our own rural adventure on Finlough Farm. Â The challenge is actually somewhat more of a struggle than one might think. Â But nonetheless a fun one.

So, in stepped Aisling, food blogger extrordinaire, to pick through The Hopsack’s shelves and let us know just how badly we are doing in that respect. Â And we must hang our heads, for although we make extraspecial efforts to stock great Irish produce where possible; in a lot of cases it’s just not possible. Â Or we’re not trying hard enough.

So a special debt of thanks must go to Ardsallagh (for their goats milk, yoghurt and cheeses), Cratloe Hills (sheep’s cheese), Mossfield Farm (emmenthal style cow’s cheese), Kelly’s Moonshine Farm (superlative biodynamic non-homogenised cows milk, yoghurts and cheeses), Connolly’s Irish Juices, Morningstar Bakery, The Baking Emporium, Paddy’s O’Granola, Eden’s Crispbread, Fad Saol (locally produced tofu), Macroom Oatmeal, Happy Pear (various sprouted things and microsalads) along with all of our Irish food suppliers for saving our blushes on the day – but that said it has laid down a marker for us. Â And you can be sure we will respond. Â And we want you to respond to us too – tell us of any fantastic Irish foods you’ve tried, and we’ll see if we can fit them on our shelves.

And if you haven’t got involved in the debate yet but want to know more you just try the following:

Get to the next For Food’s Sake event on 26th May in The Sugar Club.

Follow Eat Only Irish and Forfoodssakeireland on twitter, facebook or on your feet if you can keep up with them.

….so potatoes for tea again then.
